The Woman Who Shaped Twentieth Century Music: The Legacy of Nadia Boulanger
Nadia Boulanger taught an incredible range of composers and not one of them sounded like anyone else. There is no cookie-cutter “Boulanger sound.” Her approach was rigorous: every student memorized Bach fugues, learned to play and sing in every clef, transpose complex music to different keys at sight, and much more. But in the process, she helped each student find and cultivate their own artistic voice. Imagine a world in which we all listen to each other in this way, honoring differences while bringing out the best the other has to offer.
